Xtreme International Ice Racing (XIIR) is coming to Tahoe Blue Event Center in Lake Tahoe on February 2 and 3, 2024. It is presented by Reno Cycles & Gear. This action packed event has racers going from zero to 60 in under three seconds.
Now you may be thinking what I was thinking when I first saw the words Xtreme International Ice Racing and that is – what the heck is ice racing?
I have since learned that ice racing is a type of racing that uses cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles, all terrain vehicles or other motorized vehicles. Ice racing takes place on frozen lakes or rivers or on groomed frozen lots.
An ice speedway is an evolution of dirt speedway racing. Staten Loreng of Michigan is given credit for inventing the sport in 1975. The first ice speedway event was backed by a local motorcycle dealer in Huntsville, Alabama.
Ice racing has been described as pure adrenaline on the ice. The vehicles in the race have no brakes and no gears.
The racing in Lake Tahoe will use Speedway bikes and quads that are modified. The racers will compete on an indoor ice arena. More than 2,000 metal studs have been added to the tires. There are no brakes on the bikes.
Ice racing is made up of heats where riders can earn points to qualify for the Main Qualifying (final race). Heats are made up of four riders racing handlebar to handlebar for four people. The Main event will be made up of six riders for six laps.
Ice racing is one of the fastest growing winter racing series. XIIR just keeps getting bigger each season.
