My family and I love traveling to South Dakota.  They have a lot of great attractions.  And one of those is Big Thunder Gold Mine.  I want to tell you about Big Thunder Gold Mine – and tell you how to save money on a ticket here.

Big Thunder Gold Mine is perfect for anyone fascinated by the gold rush era of the past.  Big Thunder Gold Mine is full of rich American history.  It was discovered in 1892 by German immigrants W.B. Krupp and J.A. Engle.

What began as a gold mine named Gold Hill Lode soon became a popular tourist attraction called Big Thunder Gold Mine.  You will be amazed by its diversity of rock types, structures, and gorgeous minerals at Big Thunder Gold Mine.

Additionally, Big Thunder Gold Mine is a great place to visit to feel like you’ve stepped back in time.  It has been meticulously maintained over the years so is still resembles something you would have seen if you had lived during this bygone era.  Touring this authentic 1890’s gold mine makes for an unforgettable experience.

You will learn a lot from visiting Big Thunder Gold Mine, too.  By going on a guided tour, you learn about mining and gold panning from entertaining and knowledgeable tour guides.   Tours run daily and they are even though this gold mine is from a bygone era, it is handicap accessible.

On-Site Museum

There is an on-site museum on the Big Thunder property which was modeled after the Tykoon Gold Mill.  Admission to the tour is included in the cost of the tour.  You’ll get to see blacksmith equipment, a bell crusher, jaw crusher, stamp mill, winches, and more.

Panning for Gold

After your tour is over, you get a chance to search for gold yourself.  Though this experience does teach you the patience miners of the past must have had, it is set up in a way that you will find gold.

Location

Big Thunder Gold Mine is located in Keystone, South Dakota.  Keystone is in the Black Hills region of South Dakota and is very close to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.  So a visit here makes a nice compliment to a trip to Mount Rushmore.  And when I mentioned before that my family loves visiting South Dakota, Mount Rushmore is our favorite!
