St. Helens, Oregon really comes alive during the Halloween season. That is of course because St. Helens is the city where the popular Disney movie franchise, Halloweentown, was created! There are so many activities going on between now and Halloween. It has turned into quite the event, and it’s been featured on MTV, ABC News, and Vogue.
I want to tell you about some of the festivities. And then I’ll tell you how you can save money on your tickets!
Pirates
There is a pirate area open every weekend. Captain Jack Sparrow & other pirates are available for photo opportunities (time permitting). You can also see the crew of the Outrageous Fortune at the waterfront! The Reading Pirates read stories at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Then at 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM the gun crew fire their cannons and pistols!
Spirit of Halloweentown Train
The new Spirit of Halloweentown Train takes you to to Whispers in the Woods. This is where you meet live characters along the trail. You can also try to spot hidden forest characters in the trees. And you even get a treat!
Sand Island Adventure Water Taxi and Hunt
Ride across the river on a new water shuttle to Sand Island. After your water shuttle ride, you’ll walk the nature path. Along the way, you’ll see amazing pumpkin carvings by Carving Artist Wade Lapp. You can also find their town’s resident Big Foot on the trail – make sure you get a selfie with him! There’s a scavenger hunt available for all ages on this trail, too. There are also games where you can win prizes, like Disc Golf Challenge, Ladder Challenge, and “Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?”. You can also toast marshmallows and enjoy other delicious treats.
Haunted House
The haunted house is always popular at the Spirit of Halloweentown. This year might be the best, yet, though, as it has been newly renovated and has some cool new additions.
Here are the times the haunted house is open:
- Wednesday: 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM
- Thursday: 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM
- Friday: 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM
- Saturday: 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM
- Sunday: 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Unfortunately, this attraction may not be ADA-compliant. Also, only carried pets are allowed. Please also note that young children have to be accompanied by a paying guardian.
The Pumpkin Puzzle Plaza
There are lots of games and puzzles at the Pumpkin Plaza. There are cool props you can use for selfies. At select times, the town’s mermaid, Una, is present. And you can even be a human slingshot here!
Pumpkins
The main plaza has pumpkins. It is open every day of the week for photos.
Vendor Village
Enjoy shopping, dining, face painting, and more on weekends at the Vendors Village.

Costume Contest
Each day on the weekend there is a costume contest at 1:30 PM. Anyone can participate. There are multiple categories: Adult, Family, and Child. There are cash prizes in each category.
Special Guests
There are also special guests throughout the event. Paid photos and autographs are available with these guests.
